Building standards for disabled access in the UK?
Can anyone tell me what the building regulations are disabled and access for wheelchair users in the UK please. I know that correspond to Part M of Building Regulations, and in particular are BS8300, 2001, but I have to pay to download those. In particular, I need to know 1) minimum door widths of 2) The angles of the ramps 3) the height of equipment and accessories for anything that access wheelchair thing you can add, would be more usuful thanks!
Hi Adam – I set up structural plans as a profession, I see a lot architectural details to disabled access issues, etc.. I agree with the posters above to get a copy of Part M of Planningportal, but while there I grab a copy of Part K and, as this will help with the ramp / rail issue. If you refer to Table 2 in Part M, then the doors in general, must be 750-775mm wide (clear opening) in an existing building but have to be up to 1000 mm for places where a new building – not tell if you are asking this specific question about a house or other building, and this can have a major influence on how the Regulations are strictly enforced. ramp gradients depend vertical elevation of the ramp, and in general the rule is "the shorter the path, the greater the angle" – In any case, the ramp is not may be steeper than 1 in 12 and in most cases, 1 in 20 feel to be more desirable (provided you have the space, that is!). Figure 29 in Part M. is also useful because it will show the correct height for the plugs and light switches for wheelchair users. In any event, we hope these Notes are useful, but drop me a line if you are struggling with Planningportal and I'll try to get more help.

Since you found this site, I assume you are interested in gaining a few extra inches of height. Although (if you’re a mature adult) this may sound like a pipe dream, I assure you that it is easier than you think! We’ve all been taught that height is mostly out of our control, that it’s largely determined by genetics. I’m here to tell you that there is more to the story. Of course our gene pool has a lot to do with ones height, but it is definitely not the only factor. Your state of emotion, your exercise regimen, the food you eat, and the hours you sleep are all factors in height determination. Click here to read the rest of the article: Free Height Enhancement
