Child-Weight Guidelines
Gone are the days when it was "lovely" so that overweight children. With obesity rates in severe children tripled in the last twenty years is not surprising that we have a need, more than ever, appropriate weight guidelines for children. The concern about obesity in children has increased due to severe obesity in childhood increases the risk of children developing heart disease and diabetes. Moreover, obesity in childhood perpetuates the risk of developing weight-related diseases in later life, as overweight children have a 70% risk of overweight later in life. This risk increases to 80% if one or both parents are overweight.
It is not only of children with overweight and obesity should be worried. While children may be underweight or at risk of underweight at various points during the growth of his (or her), this can be considered normal if the child is growing, developing normally, has a healthy diet, and is active and energetic. However, it is important to be aware that a child who is underweight can have an underlying health problem that requires management. It may be a medical condition that causes the child underweight or can be an eating disorder.
How can you tell if your child is overweight, underweight or just right?
One of the best ways is to visit the Your child's doctor. However, children weight guidelines may also provide a useful method for parents to control the weight of their growing children.
It is important to note that children weight guidelines are not as relevant to children under two years of age where growth rates can vary considerably. What are the guidelines for weight children at various ages and sexes?
There are two:
1. BMI for age growth charts
2. Clinical growth charts
In general, a child is considered underweight if his (or her) weight or body mass index falls under the 5th percentile. The child becomes at risk of overweight if his (or her) weight or body mass index falls in the 85th to 94th percentile. The overweight child once he (or she) the weight or BMI is in the 95th percentile or higher.

Just as adults can calculate your BMI (body mass index) to determine if they are overweight, underweight, normal, or obese, as can be determined for children. However, theBMI guidelines for adults do not apply to children whose body fat fluctuates as they grow. The method to calculate BMI in children is the same as for adults, but the results are interpreted according to letters from children of BMI growth.
The formula for BMI
BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m) x height (m)]
You can determine how much your child's BMI falls under using the charts for BMI for age percentiles for children ages 2 to 20 for children developed by the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). Alternatively you can use a percentile of BMI-for-age calculator for children.
When calculate your child's BMI, it is important to note that the limitations of BMI for adults also apply to children. Because BMI does not directly measure body fat, still possible for a child to be overweight without being obese. Children who are athletic and have a high degree of muscle mass may appear to be overweight without being obese.
2. Clinical Growth charts
These are commonly used by physicians and health professionals to assess the height of a child and weight. Clinical growth charts to help us determine which percentile a child falls in to a scale that is appropriate for the age and gender.
The CDC has also developed weight-for-age growth charts for children.
Although weight children only serve as guidelines that – a guide for determining whether a child's weight is normal, overweight or underweight – they do help parents determine if their children potentially have a weight problem and, possibly related risks to health or conditions. As with all guidelines, which are intended to be used as a guide and we recommend that you obtain a professional medical evaluation if you suspect your child may have problems with weight.
