WHEN WOMEN HAVE
Plus other adjustments to the National Economic equations
Images television shows 1970s the first women elected to Parliament in New Zealand as she was escorted with pomp and ceremony, due to the camera real. Some men very closely joined to the whole nation watching Marilyn Waring swear with unusual vigor to serve his country and constituency.
He 22.
More sheep farmers that the boy mistook her flowers, Waring brief speech drew the approval of women through land that their concerns would no longer be ignored. At the moment of emancipation, everything seemed possible.
Fast forward two years. As head of Committee on Public Expenditure, Waring was found to raise the national budget. It was almost as if he were being guided. Running his finger along the columns of figures measuring the transactions of the nation, she was surprised not to find a single woman working at home. I should have taken pages of accounting. Without But New Zealand's largest single occupation not listed at all.
This is odd, thought Waring. As pointed out by their male counterparts, no one in more hours than women with children. While "on call" around the clock to your needs, mothers beginning as a teacher, caregiver, nurse and lifeguard also attend most or all of the maintenance, accounting and logistics complex for homes and small businesses. However, this enormous labor is completely missing from the national budget.
Women's work
No one could argue the facts. However, sheep farming Waring had been taught that when the cooperative nature of yin / yang survival strategy is far from equilibrium, any economic system that excludes so mothers background on which the time is collapse.
Along the way, she knew, the feminine side of human nature and all people invariably suffers most. Indeed, when superimposed a graph showing the typical tasks of a mother's day for a similar figure of a man working in paid employment, were covered most of the time gap "in" blocks in the table of men in the mother.
When enumerators finally joined the fatigue Aeotearoa huge lost tribe of women working without pay, they found that increasing hours of placing children and managing household tasks exceeds the value of all miners in this country, Maori by a multiple of three, and all production by 1000%. Across the Tasman Sea, on the basis of wages equivalent to those paid to provide child care and elderly, cleaning and maintenance services, taxis and delivery, all this unpaid work worth 571,000 full-time jobs in Australia alone.
Majority of North American households still can not afford the cost of switching tasks of a mother Pay with your hands. Penney Kome, author of "Somebody has to do it: whose work is Housework? Calls this" national treasure invisible ", a "enormous pool of unpaid workers who can forget when the time comes to develop national policies, such as child care, elder care, health care, unemployment insurance, pensions or social assistance. "[Ottawa Citizen, May 9 / 97]
It was no coincidence that the first women to New Zealand parliament was first to realize that women often worked as sharecroppers care of their families received almost no government shovel busy U.S. dollars public taxes in the jaws of firms that have sponsored his election, but pays very little or no taxes themselves.
"The question arises, said Waring, "which is the largest industry and what is the highest productivity and the services sector … and why can not the allowances are applied in this sector?
Free At Last
It was not only women at risk by the uneven economy that has all monetary transactions as a "plus" toll downwards. The young congressman soon joined their neighbors to oppose a proposal to mine a mountain that destroyed their centuries-old way of life for poisoning below abundant farmland.
His campaign was a success. In 1975, Waring became an international celebrity after to force a "no confidence" vote against his own party for failing to maintain the state of New Zealand as a zone free of nuclear weapons against U.S. warships visit. When Waring "crossed the floor" of Parliament to join the opposition, kiwis applauded, the government collapsed, and the intimidation of Boats had to take radioactive mischief elsewhere.
Why is it that peace has no market value, while the terrible loss and destruction war drives the world's largest economies, Waring question? Surely a national economy based on building and purchase of weapons can only lead to constant warfare.
Moreover, what is the serenity of not living near nuclear weapons or a sum of a nuclear reactor? How it works fluctuating "value" digital dollars equated with happy children, bountiful harvests and wildlife alone?
No, she saw. A system global accounting monetary exchange account as the sole criterion of "value" must be deeply flawed. The more I looked, the more it seemed to Waring that national accounting practices "had been co-opted by a pathological value system." What else could call a system which has the making, storage and use of nuclear bombs as "good" for national and global economies?
HIDDEN CODES
Marilyn Waring traveled to over 35 countries in search of a different budget model. Wherever she went, she was surprised to find than ever of national budgets represented the value of women outside the paid workforce. Neither its accounting practices always considered many other values, most people consider vital.
Where the notion of "gross national product" is? Waring asked. Why are monetary transactions that apply universally as the only measure of national significance in the countries in the hands of relatively little money changes?
The secret, someone said, is that all member nations UN must use the same accounting standards. This system of national accounts was first exposed in the 1940s by two men as a way of Great Britain to pay for World War II. They had no idea that their short-term economic equations become the price of admission to the United Nations States which now governs the lives of nearly everyone on Earth.
Turning learning that the only set of national accounts for the public sphere remains at the UN, Marilyn Waring flew to New York, where he spent weeks studying carefully this arcane accounting tradition. The more I read, the more it amazed her.
It says it is "applicable to economies around the world," no formulas are simply ignored this fundamental cultural and economic contributions as small-scale agriculture, and the unpaid work of women. Waring concluded that the global economic system was rigged against almost all those who participated.
She began to wonder how such distortions could void disastrous national sovereignty and self determination to further to some rich people in seven billion of other wild and human lives? And how, she asks, that a woman hired to clean counts as a contributor GDP but if he marries her employer and is doing the same work without pay, their work is seen as a "loss" by the same system of measurement?
None of the economists who spoke had heard of the National Accounts.
Open
The enthusiastic participation of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank in this world system "pyramid" raises another flag. Kome as noted, most of the projects implemented by organizations "have tended to ignore the struggles of women to nurture and support their families. Instead, foreign news agencies consulted with the men, and imposed expensive and ill-designed projects, aimed at bringing developing nations into the monetary economy. Somehow never seemed to benefit the community. "
Because agriculture Subsistence is specifically excluded from its calculations, Kome continued, "the IMF and World Bank projects often leave mothers and their families small plots of arable land, where they are, at least, reasonably well fed to creation of large plantations of cash crops. Prosperity of the nation's GDP, but the local children go hungry. "[Ottawa Citizen, May 9 / 97]
Accounting system in the world is a mistake, revealed to the public attracted Waring for his ideas, because "national accounting recognizes only the currency changes hands." Raising children, growing food, supporting partners, the protection of the environment on which all depend on these-and many related activities is given no value unless it comes to money.
For this Kiwi sheep farmer, all was reduced to one fundamental question about what we really appreciate it. "Ask people what they value most in life, will tell my children, my companion, my health, my religion, "he said in an interview." Generally, it is something you can not buy. "
SPEAK ENGLISH
But economists who spoke seemed to come from other planets, given their profound ignorance of reality were on. Perfecting the art of the dumb question, asked Waring to translate their jargon into recognizable English who had some practical sense.
The learned patiently explained that his concerns were irrelevant. Filling the air with poison gas, ribs food and water with pesticides, robbing the planet of the solar radiation, shielding, and are accelerating climate collapse all "externalities" that can be ignored, they said. Until people get sick. Or begin to die. That is always considered a plus, because money is always changing hands.
"It is any activity that make the gross national product (GNP) of countries rises, considered good?" Waring said.
"Absolutely," replied scholars poring over abstractions that had little to do with real life. "The money paid for goods and services provided added to the economy, "they shouted.
"But what about the oil spill of the Exxon Valdez Alaskan wildlife and devastated the coasts? "Waring wanted to know. Very profitable, he said, with millions of dollars in rescue and clean pumping into the coffers of companies and the economy local.
"What about white slavery in Eastern Europe, the sex industry in Indonesia and Thailand, prostitution in Eastern Europe? "He asked. These activities are also" a significant portion of gross national product in those countries. "
Deeply concerned about these revelations, Waring returned to farming after his term. He also took time to earn a doctorate in political economy, before returning in 1988 to rock the mostly male world of the economy with a book about all these missing women.
Counting for nothing: What men value and how Women are Worth was an eye-opening exhibition of women productive and reproductive work lack of national accounts from over 140 countries.
He has received serious attention. John Kenneth Galbraith praised his contribution as an antidote to evil behind the alleged defects. Waring Gloria Steinem called "a populist and a excellent explainer [that] puts human beings and human values in the economy. "
For example, Everyone talks about the importance of "community" Waring liked to say. But the community "usually mother or daughter, or aunt or neighbor or some other woman who works 16 to 18 hours a day."
Waring thought that if she and her followers "could prove that the work of women overwhelmingly unpaid household could be defined as slavery," then the countries defending human rights, places like Canada, New Zealand, Australia and Scandinavia, would be in breach of its fundamental obligations, and "would begin to practice what they were legally obligated to do. "
She was right. In 1993, the national accounting system was expanded to include all subsistence agriculture for women, including activities such as carrying water and collecting firewood.
Four years later, housewife Saskatchewan Carol Lees gave another boost to this process when it refused to fill in your census form. Lees told reporters he was willing to risk jail rather than the list of his many hours of work at home as a "zero" only because they were not paying for them. She had a point. The UN had found that women do two-thirds of the world's work, while receiving less than 5% of its income and own less than 1% of all assets. The UN estimates that if the work of women were counted throughout the world, their unpaid work worth 11 trillion U.S. dollars a year. [Ottawa Citizen, May 9 / 97]
The mothers are the women was associated with Lees to win three new questions about the care hours in the next Canadian census. But statistics Canada already knew that women were doing unpaid work corresponds to more than third of GDP.
1997 proved to be an exceptional year for women. The Platform for Action "adopted at the World Conference on Women in Beijing called on governments to start counting the unpaid work of women. Caring for dependents and elderly relatives, subsistence agriculture, and empowering women to employment or small businesses would be included in these calculations. [Ottawa Citizen 9 May / 97]
Seven countries did so.
HAZEL HENDERSON
On the other side of the globe, Hazel Henderson also was looking for a system economic blind workers billions of women. It is described as a "housewife" in New York, Henderson, found a new vocation after for leading a successful campaign to enact innovative air pollution during the 1960s. As Waring, soon became a frequent consultant to the Governments and international lecturer on a "new economy" was recently included.
"I realize that I am operating in a patriarchy, but then all other countries in the world is a patriarchy, "said Kevin Kelly Wired Henderson." The UN is the greatest of all patriarchy. Me I feel like Virginia Woolf. I have no country. I am a woman. I have no country. That means my country is my planet, "[Wired Feb/97]
Describing its mission as "just to say on the side of life in human evolution, that's all," Hazel Henderson proposed the first Earth Summit economists return and take all the courses he had lost-important issues like ecology, cultural anthropology, social psychology, thermodynamics, and all other disciplines related to human development.
Call this extended economic standpoint "the politics of reconceptualization" Henderson described a more harmonious economic vision in his books, the politics of the Age of the solar and building a win-win World.
Was anyone listening? Formation of opinion "anchors" keep reciting government and corporate press releases, encouraging each increase in consumer spending, without ever mentioning the figure of all this additional consumption, debt and pollution is put into this hurting world and generations of fins, feathers, hair and legs to come.
But then, denial is the strongest human propensity.
"For us to maintain our lifestyle, we tell lies to each other and especially ourselves, "lawyer and professor Bill Reese said." The lies are necessary because without them, the truth that keeps us from doing stupid things. Economic growth is one of those stupid things, because if you really think about their impact, should change our vision of the world. "
INSTRUMENT FLYING
After all, "money is not wealth," Hazel Henderson continued insisting. "I've been around the last twenty years, giving thousands of speeches about how absurd it is to measure the progress of a country using the GNP. Always I like to compare it with the flight of a Boeing 747 with nothing in the instrument panel, except for an oil pressure gauge. "[Sustainability Spring 1990]
For a more accurate measure of progress in the world, he suggested, "news and policy makers must look to the Genuine Progress Indicator to provide a more balanced economy. "
Unlike GNP, IPS assigns value to leisure time, unpaid housework and volunteer work. Original indicators of progress also subtract crime and family disintegration, depletion of resources, traffic accidents, and other debits social counted as "benefits" in the global system of national accounts.
"The IPM recognizes the importance of families, communities and play nature in economic welfare, "Henderson told his audience." Under the current system of national accounts, these factors are ignored. "[adbusters.org]
Along with defective meter and compass violently GNP tour, a dozen "Quality of Life" tools helped Hazel Henderson tape the instrument panel our spacecraft can help measure how well we're doing really about what matters most.
How does your neighborhood and nation in terms of:
Income distribution: the widening or narrowing the poverty gap?
Social and costs environment: depletion of nonrenewable resources.
Relationship between input power for goods produced: efficiency measures and recycling.
Military / civilian budget ratio: the effectiveness of government and diplomatic skills.
Education: Literacy levels, attrition school repetition rates.
Health: Infant mortality, birth weight, weight / height / age.
Nutrition, housing, availability and costs of medical care.
Basic services: water purity, sanitation, telephones, electrification.
Participation political and democratic process.
Situation of minorities and ethnic populations and women.
Water, soil and food quality, air pollution in urban areas.
The depletion of the environment: hectares of farmland and forests are lost each year.
Bio-diversity and species loss.
Child development.
As Marilyn Waring was enthusiastic people Down Under, Hazel Henderson, went to work with the German Green Party, and Soviet economists of the Russian Academy of Sciences to launch a new card-making "national report" that allow real comparison between nations "based on real progress and truly sustainable development." [Whole Earth Review Fall/95]
The idea took hold in South America, where following Henderson joined a group of experts from five continents in advising President Perez of Venezuela in a frame economic looked at new ways to measure development. At a meeting of nonaligned countries, 15 countries-Algeria, Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jamaica, Malaysia, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Senegal, Venezuela, Yugoslavia and Zimbabwe, formally accepted the new quality of life patterns, creating its own economic summit for the Southern Hemisphere.
The "G-15" first meeting in Kuala Lumpur in June 2005 for the Economic Summit of the South. The G-15 represents 30% of all the world population, the G-7 to 13%.
TOTAL PRICE
Here was real progress. But the overdeveloped nations in the North remain an urgent need for similar reform never mentioned in the news.
"You can not have a system where few are accumulating a huge amount of material wealth and power and still have an environmentally healthy and peaceful society, "says Herrera today. Especially when most of the accoutrements destruction of our accelerated technological lifestyle high, not being uploaded to your overall health and maintenance costs. [Red Herring Apr/98]
The answer, economists say, as the new Waring and Henderson, is to proceed immediately to "cost price" that accurately transfers the costs of production, use and recycling of products on the balance of producers and buyers. Once the gasoline is priced at its true cost "at the pump, for example, a planet could wheezing have the opportunity to catch his breath.
When we insist on full-cost prices, and away from crowded stores so cheap products can only be made in sweatshops and child labor camps, we will begin to see more lasting and effective made products that benefit everyone involved. Also experience a "much better quality of life" as the slow pace of our pathologies, Hazel Henderson believes.
Until then, it plans to stay busy designing new cultural and splice DNA in cultural codes and to identify the malfunction strands of DNA, like the GNP, which disease patterns generated in the body politic. "
The new world order is America
With the entire world cracking under the pressure of the Stocks struggle for survival and more, we are at a fork point, Henderson believes. "We have to go back and take a wide shot and see what everyone Case looks.
Bifurcation occurs when what comes next, radically departs from what came before a sharp turn away from monetary exchange already seeing the countries and companies that use computer networks to exchange billions of dollars of goods and services-without changing a single dollar, dinar or money.
This is huge, says Henderson. This changes every economic equation.
"When Economists say a new system we will not use the money, they get very upset, "she laughs. But the barter through e-commerce systems are already weakened the monopoly of money, he says. The coins premises are also popping up everywhere, "increasing awareness, building community, and the restructuring of our economies in a sustainable direction. "[Red Herring Apr/98]
Ignored by a world economy of 24 trillion U.S. dollars which is largely a mirage digital-to-day Today's "shadow economy" continues, says Henderson, a person to barter, reciprocity, exchange of cooperation and implementation an estimated $ 16 billion transactions each year without changing a single penny. [Feb/97 cable]
Now add another $ 12 trillion or so annual work of countless women, and the picture is very different economic landscape praised in the news "virtual.
What is more real to you? Which Would you rather support? So what does this mean? As Hazel Henderson says, "Things are much better and much worse, at the same time."
And the things that really matter are not for sale at all.

Since you found this site, I assume you are interested in gaining a few extra inches of height. Although (if you’re a mature adult) this may sound like a pipe dream, I assure you that it is easier than you think! We’ve all been taught that height is mostly out of our control, that it’s largely determined by genetics. I’m here to tell you that there is more to the story. Of course our gene pool has a lot to do with ones height, but it is definitely not the only factor. Your state of emotion, your exercise regimen, the food you eat, and the hours you sleep are all factors in height determination. Click here to read the rest of the article: Free Height Enhancement
