Fear of Heights – How to Overcome This Fear Permanently Without Expensive Therapy

The fear of heights is also known as acrophobia. The severity of this fear varies from person to person ranging from fear of being on a high floor in a building, climbing up a ladder or any other activity that involves and element of height.

Symptoms of acrophobia are typical of a panic or anxiety attack. When this fear strikes you may instinctively begin to look for things to grasp and hang onto. You may loose trust in your own sense of balance. Common reactions include coming down immediately, crawling on all fours, kneeling or otherwise lowering the body.

Depending on the severity your response to fear of heights may include sweating, shaking, heart palpitations, crying, or yelling. You may feel paralyzed and find it difficult to think.

If you have acrophobia you will probably begin to dread situations where you may have to spend time at any height off ground level. For instance, if you are going on a business or vacation trip you may be be anxious and worried that you will have to spend time in a upper level hotel room. You may put off any activities like home repairs which require a step ladder. You might avoid visiting friends for family if their homes have balconies or upper level picture windows.

There are some very real dangers associated with the fear of heights. The most common danger is that you wind up limiting your life activities to avoid the feared situation. The biggest one is that an attack while high in the air whether on a ladder or other raised platform can actually lead to panicked and dangerous behavior to get out of the situation having potentially catastrophic consequences.

The causes of acrophobia are not entirely clear. Research suggests that a certain amount of fear involving heights is normal for people and animals alike. In 1960, famed research psychologists Gibson and Walk did a “Visual Cliff” experiment which showed crawling infants, along with babies of numerous species, who refused to cross a thick glass panel that covered an apparently sharp drop-off. The presence of the infant’s mother, encouragingly calling him, did not convince the babies that it was safe.

Fear of heights, like all phobias, seems to be an over-reaction of the normal fear response. This may be a learned response to either a previous fall or a parent’s fearful reaction to heights.

Treating the fear of heights includes cognitive behavioral therapy that exposes the acrophobic to gradual increased experiences of height whether on a additional rung of a ladder or another floor of a building.

Some studies suggest that virtual reality may be as effective as behavioral therapy. If this research is confirmed it would have a major benefit of cost and time saving factors since there would be little if any need for traditional one on one therapy.

The most important factor in controlling your fear of heights is to manage your thinking in the situation. This is much easier to do than most people think. With skilled guidance from someone who understands the dynamic of a panic or anxiety attack, like acrophobia, you can not only manage but overcome the fear of heights permanently.
