What is the height of the cone in terms of x?

The radius of the base of the cone is x and the height of the cone is h.
The radius of the base of the hemisphere is x.
The surface area of the cone is equal to the surface area of the hemisphere.
Write an expression for h in terms of x.

This question came up on my Maths exam and I’d like to check if I got the right answer (I put h = 2x). If you could include the steps of the calculations to show how you got to the answer, that’d be great.

Surface area of the cone = (pi x radius x l (slant height)) + (pi x radius squared)
= (pi ‘x’ l) + (pi ‘x’ squared)

Surface area of hemisphere = (2 x pi x radius squared) + (pi x radius squared)
= (2 pi ‘x’ squared) + (pi ‘x’ squared)

surface area of cone= surface area of hemisphere
so
(pi ‘x’ l) + (pi ‘x’ squared) = (2 pi ‘x’ squared) + (pi ‘x’ squared)
pi ‘x’ l = 2 pi ‘x’ squared
pi l = 2 pi ‘x’
l = 2 ‘x’

then you can work out the height using pythagoras’s theorem (because the height meets the base at a right angle)
l squared = h squared + ‘x’ squared
and you know l is 2 ‘x’ so
(2x) squared = h squared + ‘x’ squared
h squared = 4 ‘x’ squared – ‘x’ squared
h = square root of ( 3 ‘x’ squared)

so h = ‘x’ square root of 3

(x means times and ‘x’ is the radius)

(You’ve worked out the slant height (l) is 2x, which is right, but that is different to the height of the cone :) )

Since you found this site, I assume you are interested in gaining a few extra inches of height. Although (if you’re a mature adult) this may sound like a pipe dream, I assure you that it is easier than you think!
